All Aboard for Phuket Popular Boating Events
Phuket is becoming increasingly popular with luxury boat owners, who love to explore the wonders of the Andaman Sea, with its many small tropical islands, deserted beaches and of course the stunning Phang Nga Bay. Each year yachts moor in Phuket for the fabulous weather, and stunning scenery you can't find anywhere else in the world.
The island is stepping up to this demand with four major marinas already established, Yacht Haven, Ao Po Grand Marina, Boat Lagoon and The Royal Phuket Marina, with more planned for the future. Whether you are a serious sailor or simply enjoy relaxing, fun days out on the water with like minded people, Phuket has a boating event for you.
Phuket Kings Cup Regatta
The Phuket King's Cup Regatta has to be Phuket's favourite boating event, and arguably the most popular regatta in Asia. The event began in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand, and has taken place every year since then, during the first week of December.
The highlight of Phuket's Kings Cup Regatta has to be the celebrations and prize giving events which take place after each day's race, where you are guaranteed to witness some drunken sailors! The parties take place at different venues each evening, but the main host Kata Beach Resort & Spa, pull out all the stops with a fantastic closing party and final day prize giving ceremony. This year's Phuket Kings Cup Regatta begins on 5th December.
Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek
The Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is now in it's seventh year and takes place each July during the low season when the monsoon breezes are strong. The weather certainly makes this regatta more challenging and exciting which is perhaps why it is now broadcast on international TV.
The four days of yacht racing and five nights of beachside parties are hosted from Cape Panwa Hotel a luxury resort on the east coast of Phuket. This year 40 yachts raced in 6 classes and included a good mix of fireflies, racing multihulls and IRC yachts. The event has also recently been voted the "Best Regatta in Asia" at the Asia Boating Awards 2011.
SEA Property International Phuket Multihull Championship
Organised in conjunction with Ao Chalong Yacht Club in the south of Phuket, this exciting race also takes place in July during the monsoon season, when the weather is unpredictable often resulting in inconsistent race results. This championship has been running for four years and has expanded 30% year-on-year with 25-30 yachts now taking part.
The SEA Property International Phuket Multihull Championship claims to be the biggest firefly yachting race in Asia and also has 12 yachts in the ocean multihull class. With the celebrations and prize giving being based at Ao Chalong Yacht Club, the location has added convenience for the sailors, who only have to pay THB 7,000 entry fee per boat.
Asia Superyacht Rendezvous
This exclusive international event for motor and sailing superyachts takes place annually in Phuket each December. This three day event is the longest running of its kind in Asia and brings together the largest gathering of superyachts in the region. The Asia Superyacht Rendezvous gets owners together fun on and off shore including two friendly sailing events.
Starting at the Royal Phuket Yacht Club in Naiharn the superyachts gather for a welcome cocktail party and the following day embark on the first race up the west coast ending at The Surin Phuket. Here the group enjoys more parties, delicious Thai cuisine and entertainment. At the end of the event, the huge 100ft plus vessels depart to explore the Andaman Sea during the holiday season.
PIMEX Phuket International Boat Show
If you are in the market for purchasing a yacht to cruise the Andaman Sea and enjoy the stunning scenery it has to offer, then browse around the PIMEX show held at the Royal Phuket Marina. Up to 40 yachts are on display for visitors to climb aboard and inspect with brand name power boats, sailing yachts and catamarans from the UK, Italy, America, Thailand and more.
The show gives buyers the opportunity to see first hand the luxury models on the water and discuss options with the dealers direct. Even if you are not looking to buy, the show is a good place to visit as the stylish Royal Phuket Marina has a lively boardwalk with some great restaurants and live music entertainment. The next show takes place at the end of March 2012.
